Prospecting for petroleum is a four-step process: 1/ Echo soundings are received. 2/ The soundings are analysed for reflections. 3/ The reflections are interpreted as a geological model. 4/ The prospect is tested by drilling. Seismic data acquisition and analysis in the petroleum industry is a multi-billion dollar activity, Earth Surroundings Analysis describes the elements of soundings analysis. In particular, it examines the relationship between the practical (processing) and theoretical (inversion) approaches to the subject. This new text, together with the author's earlier work - Imaging the Earth's Interior (BSP 1985) provides a complete introduction to geophysical data processing. A primary aim of this text is to explain the process of inverse modelling. Seismologists and exploration geophysicists share the ability to synthesize the data implied by any model. They have much to learn, however, about inverse modelling, that is, given the data, the process of finding the most appropriate model. This new book provides forty computer routines (in Fortran) for data analysis. The author intends to make the text available in an electronic form, where the routines can be used to manipulate real data sets. Exercises at the end of the sections enable the reader to assess his/her grasp of the subject.

This book is about the use of computer programs for the analysis of geophysical data to try to determine the constitution of the Earth's interior, a process which enables a geophysicist to locate petroleum and mineral prospects. Traditional concepts of data processing are thoroughly discussed to provide a good foundation on the subject. The general theory of mathematical-physical computations in stratified media leads to computational techniques for two- and three-dimensionally heterogeneous media. A feature of the book is the use of partial differential equations for reflection seismic data processing in petroleum prospecting. Professor Claerbout and his students have originated a great deal of this material, which thus cannot be found in any other book.

Prospecting for oil begins with seismic soundings. The echoes are computer processed into images that reveal much about the earth's geological history. "Imaging the Earth's Interior" describes the image-making process. Professor Claerbout was the first to use the wave equation of physics directly in the image-making process, and his finite difference implementation quickly became an industry standard. His graduate research group at Stanford University has been at the forefront of subsequent developments, many of which are described in this book. It is intended for students entering earth sciences from other areas, earth science professionals, and professionals in other fields in which waves and images are studied. It will also be useful to data recording engineers and to geologists who need to understand the opportunities and limitations of image creation and enhancement processes. The book strikes a balance between current industry practice and unrealized research goals.
